CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Stepping into the interview room, Drew felt unsettled. It wasn't normally like this when he interviewed suspects. He'd watched the earlier conversation with Declan, replayed the tape in the hopes that he'd find some kind of chink in the man's armour, but there was nothing. Well, nothing Drew could use, anyway, and that frustrated him more than he could show.

When Gwen had disappeared, the officers who had investigated had been convinced of Declan's guilt. They had conveyed that to everyone else on the Force and it had created an atmosphere of certainty. When he'd taken up the case, Drew had been sure Declan was his man. And now...

Blowing out his cheeks, he turned to face the man sitting at the desk with his head in his hands.

"We've been over this, DI Haskell," Roger Blackwell, Declan Campbell's solicitor said. The fact that Declan could afford to hire a shark like Blackwell spoke volumes about the change in his standard of living. When Gwen had been alive they had mostly lived off the money she had made from her work as an influencer. But she wasn't raking in the kind of cash that some of the larger internet celebrities could command. "My client has nothing else to say."

"There are a few things I'd like your client to clear up for me," Drew said addressing the solicitor before he turned his attention to Declan. "Can I get you something to drink before we start, Mr Campbell?"

Declan shook his head, but kept his gaze fixed on the table top.

"That was quite the situation this morning. Your son is a spirited lad," Drew said amiably.

"Where is Simon?"

"Your son is being looked after," Drew said, keeping his voice light. "You don't need to worry about him. He's in safe hands."

There was a bleakness to Declan's eyes. A misery that words couldn't convey. "Why would he say those things? How could he believe I would hurt his mum?"

"Declan," Blackwell's warning was clear. Not that Declan seemed to hear him.

"I just don't know who would put something like that in his head." He glanced at his solicitor.

"Mr Campbell, we discussed this," Blackwell said smartly. "You've got nothing to say on the matter."

Declan shook his head. "I wold never hurt his mum," he said. "Why would he say otherwise?"

"Your son is hurting," Drew said carefully. Despite trying to tread lightly he received a warning look from the solicitor. "We had a look at your finances."

Declan's head snapped up. "Why would you do that?" He turned to his solicitor. "Why would they do that? What does that have to do with anything?"

"We spoke about this," Blackwell said placatingly. "It's just normal procedure, nothing to be concerned about."

"But they have no right..."

"Actually, we have every right," Drew said softly. "Before Gwen went missing, your business wasn't doing too well."

Declan shrugged. "So? It was a new venture. It was hard to get it off the ground."

"You were behind on your payments," Drew said. "And then magically you weren't."

"Is there a point in all of this, DI Haskell?" Blackwell's tone was one that brooked no argument.
